About the event
About this course:
Christi Moon Robbins has been a funeral director and embalmer for 18 years, and has been a Certified Crematory Operator with the high-volume third-party crematory East Tennessee Cremation Company since 2018. She also serves as the Family Cremation Center Coordinator there, as well as overseeing Marketing & Member Relations for The Group.
This course provides essential information for funeral professionals handling bodies containing radioactive seeds from brachytherapy treatments. The course covers the basics of brachytherapy, including the different types (low-dose, high-dose, and permanent), and explains the anatomy of a radioactive seed, including millicuries, half-life, and common seed types. It details the precautions medical professionals take with living patients and the responsibilities of healthcare radiation safety officers before releasing a body, including proper release, tagging, and supervision procedures. The course also addresses the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission's statement on the matter. Real-world case studies are examined, including the specific instance of "A Radioactive Corpse..." to illustrate potential challenges. A significant portion of the course focuses on practical precautions for embalming and cremation, emphasizing protection, minimizing exposure time, and maintaining distance. Specific guidance is provided on the safe disposal of seeds after cremation. This training equips funeral professionals to handle remains containing radioactive seeds safely and with appropriate knowledge of the associated risks.
