About the event
About this course:
Dr. Brad Kuchnicki, funeral director and embalmer for 28 years, and OSHA-certified Occupational Safety Specialist and Outreach Trainer— as well as the Executive Director of The Group— will be presenting our first Continuing Education course.
This course on Respiratory Protection in the Funeral Industry provides a comprehensive overview of the essential elements for establishing and maintaining an effective respiratory protection program. Participants will learn about the importance of respiratory protection in the funeral setting, where potential hazards such as embalming fluids, chemicals, infectious agents, and decomposition byproducts exist. The course covers key responsibilities for both supervisors and employees, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the program. A significant portion of the course focuses on respiratory selection, including hazard assessment methodologies, the use of NIOSH-certified equipment, proper assignment of respirators based on task and location, and the crucial process of updating hazard assessments. The course also addresses the requirements for medical evaluations and fit testing for all personnel required to wear respirators, including those who use them voluntarily. Detailed training requirements are outlined, covering hazard awareness, proper respirator use and maintenance, limitations of respirators, and emergency procedures. Participants will also learn about the correct procedures for storage, reuse, maintenance, and care of respirators. The course emphasizes the importance of regular program evaluation and meticulous recordkeeping, including hazard assessments, medical evaluations, fit testing records, training records, and respirator maintenance logs. By the end of this course, participants will have a thorough understanding of the components of a successful respiratory protection program and be equipped to implement and maintain such a program within their workplace.
